Alabaster was a very popular material for carving, especially in the production of bowls, dishes and jars which were used for a variety of purposes. This is largely due to its soft porous qualities which made it far easier to work with in comparison to materials such as marble. The amber coloured bands which can be found in alabaster, such as in this piece, are believed to be as a result of natural radioactivity in the minerals. However, the conditions for this are not so common and these bands of colour can be bleached out by prolonged exposure to the sun.
