Ancient Egyptian Shallow Alabaster Dish

A delicate Ancient Egyptian shallow alabaster dish which features a wide circular base from which the thin sides extend outwards to reach a wide, flat, flaring rim. The vessel exhibits a creamy translucent colour throughout with earthy encrustations and a slight chip in the rim.

Date: Circa 2500–2400 BC

Condition: Good condition. Earthy encrustations likely due to age.

Shallow dishes such as this were likely used as serving and dining vessels. However, alabaster was a very popular material for carving, especially in the production of bowls, dishes and jars which were used for a variety of purposes. This is largely due to its soft porous qualities which made it far easier to work with in comparison to materials such as marble.
