Linear Pattern

A linear pattern refers to a pattern formed by parallel lines forming bands, such patterns may be found on jewellery and are common in ceramics where the use of a wheel lends itself to easily producing linear patterns on a rounded pottery form. Such decoration is commonly the first style of decoration of pottery such as with Greek pottery from the Geometric Period. Such linear patterns can be used as border devices between different scenes or may themselves be embellished as in the decoration of the Geometric Period whereby a variety of patterns themselves form linear patterns or bands across the height of the form.
