Sgraffito Design

Sgraffito is a decorative technique which uses scratched marks to show through to the lower levels of the material, thereby creating a contrasting colour and texture. Technically this can be done with layers of clay or ceramics, or even using layered paints. The word orginates from Italian (to scratch) and Greek (to write). The sgraffito technique features on some of our ancient pots, bowls and pottery.
