Sculpted portraits such as this were often commissioned to project power, legitimacy, and dynastic connections. They emphasised realism and the unique, individual characteristics of their subject’s personality, often furrowed brows or tense lips. Despite its modest scale, the material of alabaster allows light to diffuse across the surface, giving the skin a lifelike warmth. Its style aligns with portraits of Hellenistic kings influenced by the legacy of Alexander the Great, combining personal likeness with the traits of rulership, such as sternness and strength. Hellenistic rulers sometimes incorporated divine attributes, like bull’s horns or other symbols, to suggest a connection to the gods and their divine right to rule.
