During the Tang Dynasty, statuettes were created to accompany the deceased in the afterlife. Figures of this type usually depict servants, officials, soldiers, musicians, court attendants, dancers and, in the case of animals, horses and Bactrian camels. As in life, attendant figures are depicted standing nearby, waiting to fulfil the desires and needs of the deceased. The role of foreign grooms was to attended to the horses or camels of the Tang elite. The style used depicted a foreign look compared to the stereotypical Tang aesthetic. Therefore, these men are likely portrayed from Central Asia or the Indian subcontinent.
