Sardonyx
Sardonyx combines and alternates sard and onyx to create layers of contrasting parallel lines. It is often seen in ancient jewellery, with the earliest uses dating back to the Second Dynasty of Egypt. The gemstone was also popular in the Classical world, where it was often carved with images of heroes and gods, such as Hercules and Mars, and wore as a talisman in battle. The carved stone was believed to harness the bravery of the figures, granting protection and bravery on the battlefield. During the Renaissance, sardonyx was associated with eloquence and was wore by orators to aid clear thinking and communication.
